바코드에 사용하는 국가 식별코드의 의미는 다음과 같습니다.
국제상품코드 관리기관(EAN International)이
각국 코드관리기관(Numbering Organization)에 부여하는 코드로서
880은 한국 코드관리기관인(재)한국유통정보센터(EAN Korea)를 나타냄.

즉 한국의 국가코드는 880으로 한국은 3자리 국가코드를 가지며,
1981이전에 EAN에 가입한 국가인 경우 2자리 국가코드를가지고 있음.
그러나 원산지를 나타내는 의미는 아니라고 합니다.

국가번호가 포함되어 있는 바코드는
바코드의 종류중 EAN 코드이며 자리수는 총 13자리로 구성되어 있습니다.
 
1. 국가식별코드 (3자리)
  첫 3자리 숫자는 국가를 식별하는 코드로 대한민국은 항상 880으로 시작되며, 세계 어느 나라에 수출 되더라도 우리나라 상품으로 식별된다. 그러나 국가식별코드가 원산지를 나타내는 것은 아니다. 1981년까지 EAN에 가입한 국가는 국가식별코드가 2자리이며, 1982년 이후에 가입한 국가는 국가식별코드가 3자리이다.
 
2. 제조업체코드 (6자리)
  6자리 제조업체코드는 한국유통물류진흥원에서 제품을 제조하거나 판매하는 업체에 부여하며 업체별로 고유코드가 부여되기 때문에 같은 코드가 중복되어 부여되지 않는다.
 
3. 상품품목코드 (3자리)
  제조업체코드 다음의 3자리는 제조업체코드를 부여받은 업체가 자사에서 취급하는 상품에 임의적으로 부여하는 코드이며, 000 ~ 999까지 총 1,000품목의 상품에 코드를 부여할 수 있다.
 
4. 체크디지트 (1자리)
  스캐너에 의한 판독 오류를 방지하기 위해 만들어진 코드로, 바코드가 정확하게 구성되어 있는가를 보장해주는 컴퓨터 체크 디지트를 말한다.
